How to calculate it
- Measure wall-to-wall length and width.
- Find coverage per carton on the product label.
- Add waste for end cuts, stagger, and unusable boards.
What the calculator is doing
Boxes = ceil[(floor area × (1 + waste %)) ÷ coverage per box].
- Coverage per box should come from the exact SKU, not a similar product.
- Waste covers staggered joints, damaged tongues, end cuts, and boards rejected for appearance.
- The calculator returns purchase area through whole cartons; it does not estimate underlayment or trim.
Buying checklist
- Record the SKU and carton coverage from the product label.
- Confirm all cartons share the same color or production lot.
- Plan transitions, reducers, stair noses, and base trim separately.
- Check the installation guide for allowed minimum board length and joint offset.
Common mistakes
Subtracting every cabinet and island
Small deductions can be false economy because offcuts rarely fit those exact locations.
Using room area as the order quantity
A staggered plank layout always creates end cuts and unusable short pieces.
Forgetting discontinued-stock risk
Keeping a sealed carton can be valuable when the exact color is unavailable years later.
Frequently asked questions
How much flooring waste is normal?+
Use 7–10% for a rectangular room with a straight layout. Increase to 12–15% for diagonal layouts, closets, alcoves, or many short runs.
Should I subtract cabinets?+
Subtract permanent cabinets only when flooring will not run underneath. Do not subtract small fixtures because offcuts rarely match those spaces perfectly.
