Transparent calculations

Every estimate starts with a measurable assumption.

Our formulas are intentionally understandable. The goal is not false precision—it is a defensible order quantity that exposes what was measured, assumed, converted, and rounded.

Geometry before products

A rectangular area is length multiplied by width. Rectangular-room wall area uses two times length plus width, multiplied by height, then subtracts entered openings. Volume adds a finished depth after converting it into the same base unit.

Irregular spaces should be split into simple shapes. The calculators do not infer hidden recesses, slopes, varying depths, or construction tolerances; those conditions must be measured or modeled separately.

Unit conversion

Metric dimensions are converted into metres before square or cubic calculations. Imperial tile and board dimensions may begin in inches while room dimensions are in feet, so conversion happens before division. Cubic feet are divided by 27 when a result is displayed in cubic yards.

We preserve precision through intermediate calculations and round display values for readability. Counts are not rounded until the purchase rule requires a complete piece or package.

Waste and allowance

Waste is applied after the base quantity. It can represent cuts, pattern alignment, breakage, settling, compaction, and imperfect site conditions. Defaults are starting points, not product or code requirements.

A percentage does not replace a layout. Package rounding may already buy more coverage than the chosen allowance, so users should compare the final cartons or bags with net need.

Purchasable quantities and cost

A store generally cannot sell a fraction of a carton, roll, board, can, or bag. Package counts are rounded up only after allowance has been included. Cost uses the rounded purchase quantity—not the theoretical fraction consumed.

Bulk gravel is an exception: volume is multiplied by user-entered density and cost by weight. The supplier may still impose a minimum load or sales increment that the calculator cannot know.

Product specifications

Editable coverage, yield, density, package size, pattern repeat, and price fields should be replaced with values from the exact product. Defaults make the tool understandable on first use; they are not maintained as a catalog of every current retail SKU.

Where the result depends on installation conditions—paint porosity, wallpaper match, concrete subgrade, or aggregate compaction—the page names that dependency and links to deeper guidance.

Testing and limitations

Automated tests cover representative metric and imperial projects, unit conversion, waste application, and package rounding. Worked examples provide a second, visible arithmetic check. Builds also validate every localized route and its structured data.

Tests verify that the software follows its stated formula. They cannot verify a user’s measurement, determine engineering dimensions, interpret local code, or guarantee product availability. Those limits remain visible beside calculator results.
